Student Success Story: Vu Mai

Vu Mai has the distinct honor of being one of the first students to graduate from the College of Emerging and Collaborative Studies. He will graduate in summer 2025 with a degree in data science. He plans to use data to make a positive impact by improving systems, optimizing processes, and solving complex challenges.

“I chose data science as my major because I enjoy working with data to uncover insights that drive meaningful decisions,” he says. “The combination of analytical thinking, problem-solving, and real-world applications excites me, especially in fields like healthcare and energy.”

Vu may be a data science major, but he’s also interested in artificial intelligence and how to apply it to problem solving through data. Because of the flexibility of CECS, he has been able to take AI courses to enhance his working knowledge of AI. “My favorite course has been AI, where we learned how to work with AI models and even built our own to solve real-world problems,” he says. “It was both fun and practical, giving me the chance to apply what I learned in a meaningful way.”

The hands-on learning experiences through CECS has also helped Vu gain invaluable experience as he prepares to enter the workforce. “I’m working on a capstone project with a real-world organization, focusing on AI and its applications in enterprise to foster innovation,” he says. “It is also a great opportunity to gain insights into professional work while applying my knowledge to real-world problems. It’s allowed me to develop practical skills and make meaningful contributions. CECS has been a great support, especially through programs like RISE Base Camp, which connect students with industry professionals who share valuable insights and guidance.”

Vu encourages students to not just learn theory, but to actually put that theory to work. “It isn’t just about studying, it’s about doing,” he says. “Whether you are passionate about AI, data science, or cybersecurity, CECS will challenge you to think critically and solve real world problems. You will leave CECS ready for whatever comes next because of the preparation within their courses and the support they offer.”
