Student Spotlight: Elizabeth Hughes

Meet Elizabeth Hughes, Applied Artificial Intelligence major with a minor in Human-Intelligent Systems Interaction and Business Management and member of the CECS Advisory Council.

Elizabeth Hughes

What interested you in CECS?

“I liked the availability that I’m able to have with advisors, researchers, and the community within CECS. I was really attracted to RISE Base Camp, a weekly event where we can actually garner connections in a more casual setting, instead of a formal networking event.”

What is your major/minor/certificate?

“I am majoring in Applied Artificial Intelligence and double minoring in Human-Intelligent Systems Interaction (HISI) and Business Administration.”

Why did you choose that combination of studies?

“I choose [HISI] because it fits into my undergraduate research. And if I were to further develop my research, I would be going into AI interaction systems. Additionally, I think it’s always good to have a business background.”

“I originally wanted to go into Computer Science and focus on AI with my undergraduate research. Then, I found out CECS has a major focusing on AI, so I decided to choose Applied AI.”

What does your undergraduate research focus on?

“I’m currently researching how AI is being used in quality control systems. It’s more under research and development engineering. Oftentimes, manufacturing industries use computer visions systems to identify whether a screw is loose, the quality of a product, false negatives or positives, hits/misses, etc. Currently, I’m looking into the automotive industry.”

What is your favorite part about being a CECS student?

“I like how my courses are project-based. I feel like it provides more applied learning that is sometimes missing in other schools. It makes me feel prepared for whenever I go into the industry and even when I work alongside teammates.”

“Also, I appreciate how CECS values developing relationships with industry partners through RISE Base Camps, Bytes with the Dean, and more.”

If you could tell other students about CECS, what would you tell them?

“It’s a very welcoming environment. All the students know one another, so classrooms work together as a team more. A lot of other classrooms will be in a large lecture hall where you don’t know anyone in that class. However, at CECS, whenever you’re presenting, you’re actually getting feedback and you’re allowing for reviews and iterations to your work. People are building off of one another when it comes to ideas, projects, and connections. It’s very community based!”

What do you hope to do after graduation?

“I will hopefully be getting my PhD, and I’ll be researching AI, teaming, and interactions in the manufacturing industry, specifically.”

Fun Fact:

“I really like to prioritize movement alongside education. I like keeping my brain active, as well as my body. I’m also a big cat fan! I love my cat.”
