Student Spotlight: Eric Castelan

Eric is a Senior at CECS, majoring in Applied Artificial Intelligence. He is our Lead Student Ambassador. Keep scrolling to learn more about him and his time at CECS!

What interested you about CECS?

I was drawn to CECS because of its focus on emerging technologies and its forward-thinking approach to education. Recognizing that many of today’s most influential industries are moving toward AI, I wanted to be ahead of the game rather than behind.

Why did you choose Applied AI as your major?

I was originally a Computer Science major, but when I heard about CECS and its programs, I immediately made the switch to Applied Artificial Intelligence. The major aligned perfectly with my interests and my goal of building the skills needed to thrive in a technology-driven world.

How do you use AI in everyday life and at work?

Before I was majoring in it, I was using it to help manage my work schedule and to keep track of personal commitments. While working in a hospital during COVID-19, I relied on AI for scheduling meetings and managing inventory when resources were stretched thin. Today, I use AI to streamline long tasks, improve efficiency, and reduce the need for micromanagement—both at work and in everyday life.

What is your favorite part about being a CECS Student Ambassador?

I enjoy the opportunity to connect with partners, students, faculty, and professionals across different disciplines. The role has helped me strengthen my communication and collaboration skills while learning from diverse perspectives. These experiences directly prepared me for my internship at CGI Federal and helped me stand out. I actually earned a return offer thanks to the skills developed through CECS!

What is the most valuable lesson you have learned as a CECS Student so far?

CECS has taught me the importance of open-mindedness and teamwork. Collaborating across different subjects and with a variety of students, faculty, and industry professionals has shown me that success doesn’t come from working alone, but from leveraging the strengths of a team.

If you could tell other students one thing about CECS, what would it be?

CECS offers a unique opportunity to get involved in a rapidly growing and in-demand field. Take advantage of the chance to build your network through programs like RISE and establish yourself early in this emerging area.

What do you hope to do after graduation?

I hope to either join one of the companies where I’ve already interned or launch my own business in software, robotics, or medicine.
